Two significant birthdays

Over the Australia Day long weekend birthday celebrations were the order of the day. Elizabeth celebrated her 80th and Mirramu its 25th.

They celebrated in customary style with many friends, colleagues and neighbours joining in an afternoon and evening of dance, music, conversation and food. Canberra based African band Zambezi Sounds provided guests with plenty of dance rhythms, ending with a Miriam Makeba song, My Angel, dedicated to Elizabeth. Seeing Elizabeth and band member Gus Chinanai dancing together on the stage to this piece was a moving moment.

A moment among many though – we all loved Miri’s  Motherless Child, Alexandra’s operatic vocals, Jon and Moya’s evocative song Weereewa and the deeply romantic duet by Dan and Sally. Then there was fabulous tango, academic contextualising, Prabhu on the fascinating HANG instrument and Julie with Elizabeth improvising. There was the wonderful GOLD group who performed right on Golden Hour. Elizabeth’s moth solo with Nitya accompanying was yet another highlight.

A flock of hang-gliders appeared just on dinner interval time – as if by order. Andreas in his DJ guise kept the night going and the dancers happy well after dark.

What a terrific event to start the year and just delightful to have so many friends to celebrate with us. Huge thanks to everyone who worked on the weekend on everything including the catering (thanks Bernadette especially), shopping, setting up, cleaning up, planning and execution. Let the games begin.
